I switch the ignition again. It makes a grinding sound.

“Shit,” I breathe. What the heck?

Frustrated, I blow out a breath and look at Jake. He’s watching me, a concerned look on his face.

I roll down my window. “My car won’t start.”

Frowning, he walks back over to me. His spicy and comforting scent covers me, and I suddenly don’t care that my car’s not working. Its malfunction brought him back to me.

“I heard that noise,” he said. “Any idea what it is?”

“No clue. It did fine on the way over here.” I turn the ignition again, but there’s no more grinding. The car doesn’t do a thing.

“Want to pop the hood?”

“You know about cars?” I ask, hopeful.

He hesitates. “Well . . .”

“It’s okay,” I say on a laugh. “I won’t get rid of you for not being a stereotypical macho male.”

“Thank God.” He presses his hand to his chest and pretends to be relieved.

“I guess I should call a mechanic.”

Phone in hand, I climb from the car. It’s only when I unlock my screen that I notice it’s almost eleven.

“I don’t think you’ll be able to get someone to look at it this late,” Jake says, reading my mind. “The most you can likely hope for right now is a tow.”

“Yeah.” Chewing on my bottom lip, I survey the parking lot. There are no signs about parking limits. “Do you think . . .”’

“I would love to give you a ride home, but no pressure. I can also wait here with you while you call a car or a friend.”

I tap my fingers against the side of the phone. Giselle is probably cuddling with Cash. I don’t want to be a cockblocker even if they are engaged. And there’s no other friend I’d feel comfortable calling.

“A ride home would be great,” I tell him. “If it’s not any trouble.”

“It definitely isn’t,” he says.

“Great.”

Making sure my car is locked up tight, I follow Jake down the sidewalk. He holds the door open for me, and I slide inside the Jeep. I’m pleasantly surprised to find it super clean and nice smelling. It makes me wonder if his house is the same.

I give him directions, and it’s not long before we’re cruising into my neighborhood.

“Funny thing,” he comments.

“What?” I ask with a tilt of my head.

“I’m right over here, too.”

“Really? That’s crazy.” Nice to know we’re not too far away from each other. Future dates shouldn’t be too much of an ordeal.

“Crazy awesome,” he grins. My stomach flips with excitement. Yes. Definitely crazy awesome.

“Take a left here.” I point. “On Dawson.”

“O-kay.”

There’s humor there, and I glance at him, but it’s hard to read his face in the poor lighting.

“What?” I joke. “Don’t tell me we’re right next to each other.”

“How close are we?”

“Close. Just a few houses down.”

He slows the car down.

“There I am!” I gesture at the cute little house with the white picket fence.

Jake stops the car in front of it. “Okay, this is weird . . .”

I blink.

He twists to one side, facing me.
